Only two weeks after sealing his departure from West Ham United, the former Hammer already has something of a point to prove.

Talk about being written off before you’ve had a chance to prove yourself.

After eight years as a West Ham United player, goalkeeper Nathan Trott completed a £1.7 million move to Danish giants FC Copenhagen at the end of June, per The Guardian.

But he certainly has big boots to fill. Or should that be gloves?

Kamil Grabara, the one-time Liverpool youngster, had established himself as arguably the premiere shot-stopper in the whole of Scandinavian football during his time at Copenhagen. Grabara will be missed, then, sealing his departure to Bundesliga outfit VFL Wolfsburg.

But is Trott the right man to step into the void created by Grabara’s exit?

One pundit certainly has his doubts, even if the former England Under 20 international has already made quite the impression in Denmark following two seasons on loan at Vejle Boldklub.

Nathan Trott leaves West Ham United for Copenhagen

“I’m taking a big chance now, but I don’t think Nathan Trott is good enough for FCK,” Daniel Boysen, the former Brondby forward, tells the SpilXperten’s podcast. “He’s had a great season (at Vejle), but I don’t think he’s good enough.

“I’m not a goalkeeping expert, so it’s a bit gratuitous for me to say. But his goalkeeping skills aren’t on Grabara’s level.”

Boysen feels that 25-year-old Trott simply does not share Grabara’s presence and fear-factor between the sticks.

At 6ft 2, he is three inches shorter than the man tasked with helping Wolfsburg move on from the departure of the Saudi-bound Belgium gloveman Koen Casteels.

“I think that he has some slightly funny positioning where, as a striker, I would like to (take him on rather than) Grabara, who takes up much more of the goal, I feel,” Boysen adds. “But I could be wrong, and he has had a good season.”

Boysen wonders if Copenhagen could yet look to bring in another goalkeeper should the option arrive despite the fact that the capital city club already have another shot-stopper in ex-Arsenal benchwarmer Runar Alex Runarsson.

Danish veteran and Leicester legend Kasper Schmeichel is a free-agent after his contract at RSC Anderlecht expired.

Former Hammer vs ex-Arsenal man for number one shirt

“If Schmeichel comes knocking on the door with gloves in hand, then it could well be that they (Copenhagen) feel that it could be a very good option,” Boysen argues.

As things stand, it will be between Trott and Runarsson for the number one shirt at Copenhagen. The latter joined from Arsenal in January but he is yet to make even a single Superliga appearance.

Then again, he was warned that opportunities would be restricted until Grabara’s departure became official.

“There is no secret that Kamil is our first choice,” Jacob Neestrup, who masterminded that famous Champions League triumph over Manchester United, told Bold a few months ago. “Right now, it is the case that Kamil Grabara is a fantastic keeper at FC Copenhagen.

“And, then, Alex has to come in and press on with everything he can. He comes in and must be ready. He and we know that there is a situation in the summer where Kamil changes (clubs).

“So he now has five months to convince us that we should look his way in relation to a potential first-choice keeper at FC Copenhagen.

“We’ll have to look (whether we feel he can replace Grabara). But we think we’ve got a really good goalkeeper in. It is important, and we are satisfied with that.”
