It has been over a year since Jan Vertonghen parted ways with Tottenham after his contract expired at the club.

The 34-year-old headed towards Portugal when Spurs let him go and signed on the dotted line for Benfica.

Out on the field, Vertonghen’s decision-making was one of his top qualities as a defender and a big reason why he built such a memorable partnership with Toby Alderweireld at the back.

Vertonghen’s also ensured that he is making wise decisions off the field as well because the call to join Benfica is working out like a treat.

On Wednesday night, whilst Barcelona stole the headlines for getting knocked out of the Champions League and heading to the Europa League.

It was Benfica who snatched the second spot at their expense, after they beat Dynamo Kyiv 2-0 at the Estádio da Luz.

It now means that the Portuguese giants, who are an unseeded team in the knockout stages, could lock horns with an English side.

Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United possibly await Vertongen and his teammates, along with Real Madrid, Ajax, Lile and Juventus.

Either way, whilst the ball-playing centre-back clashes with the best of the best in Europe, it’s the Europa Conference League for his former club.

Spurs were due to play French side Rennes on Thursday night, but a COVID outbreak at the club now means that the game has been postponed.

It was a vital game for Antonio Conte’s side because they could get knockout out at the group stages if they drop more points.
