Matt Doherty could be returning to the Premier League soon, but not to Tottenham Hotspur. The defender could reportedly end up at Wolverhampton Wanderers instead.
Former Tottenham Hotspur player Matt Doherty in talks with Wolverhampton Wanderers
According to The Athletic, former Tottenham Hotspur right-back Matt Doherty is in talks with Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The 31-year-old is a free agent at the moment following his departure from Atletico Madrid at the end of last season.
The report has claimed that there have been “positive discussions” between Doherty and his old club Wolves.
Although a deal has not been agreed, it appears that the Republic of Ireland international will return to Wolves in the summer transfer window as a free agent, according to the report.

The 31-year-old, who can operate as a right-back or as a right wing-back, was on the books of Wolves from 2010 until 2020 before he joined Tottenham.
As reported by Sky Sports on January 31, 2023, Tottenham mutually terminated Doherty’s contract and allowed him to move to La Liga club Atletico Madrid on a permanent deal for the second half of last month.
“Doherty’s departure was set to be a loan but that would have taken Tottenham up to nine players out on loan and FIFA’s limit is eight,” stated the report.
Sensible move
The Republic of Ireland international could never make a massive impact at Spurs, and it did not really come as a surprise that then Tottenham head coach Antonio Conte did not fancy him in his team.
Doherty was at his best at Wolves, and he still has a fair few years left in him.
After all, the right-back is 31 now.
