Speaking on his YouTube channel, Express journalist Ryan Taylor has been discussing some of Middlesbrough’s transfer plans.

Boro’s transfer window is about to kick into gear. They’re about to receive £15m for Djed Spence and that should allow the floodgates to open for new signings at the Riverside Stadium.

The journalist says that Boro are keen on the likes of Dwight Gayle, Viktor Gyokeres, Ellis Simms and perhaps most interestingly, Jarrad Branthwaite.

What’s been said?

Taylor spoke about Boro’s transfer targets.

“Boro are resigned to losing Spence, but they need that money through the door to fund their promotion push, there’s a few targets on the agenda, not least a striker, Dwight Gayle is a player they’ve looked at, Coventry’s Viktor Gyokeres is a player they’ve also targeted, Ellis Simms is under consideration as well, While Jarrad Branthwaite, the Everton centre-back, is a player they’d like to take on loan as well,” Taylor said.

Perfect loan for Branthwaite

Middlesbrough are apparently keen to bring Branthwaite in, and Everton would be wise to let the defender head to Teesside.

There aren’t many better destinations for a young Premier League defender to hone his craft than Boro at the moment.

Indeed, Chris Wilder’s track record of improving defenders is there for all to see. He turned Chris Basham into one of the Premier League’s best centre-backs during his time at Sheffield United, while Jack O’Connell was on the verge of an England call-up under his tutelage.

If Branthwaite can follow that same trajectory under Wilder this season, he could be ready to star for Everton this time next year.

This is a loan deal that could suit all parties.
