Emiliano Martinez has told Sky Sports that leaving Arsenal for Aston Villa is a step-up for him.

Martinez recently left Arsenal for Premier League rivals Villa in the summer transfer window.

The Argentine goalkeeper played regularly in the final weeks of last season due to injury to Bernd Leno, but the German was reinstated as the first choice between the posts this campaign.

The 28-year-old has said that although everyone thinks that it is a step-down for him to leave Arsenal for Villa, he considers it as a step-up.

Martinez told Sky Sports, as transcribed by Goal.com: “Aston Villa is a massive club, I had no doubts over coming here. Everyone thinks it’s a step down going from Arsenal to Villa, but I actually think it’s a step up in my career.”

Playing regularly

Arsenal are a bigger club than Villa and will be challenging for the Champions League places in the Premier League table this season, while the Villans may not even end up in the top 10.

However, Martinez was not going to play regularly at the Gunners this season, and for him, on a personal level in regard to playing time, it is certainly a great move.

The Villans are a big club, and playing first-team football on a regular basis for a 28-year-old is much better than warming the substitutes’ bench, and Martinez has made the right decision.
