Reported Arsenal target Freddie Woodman has suggested to The Northern Echo that he wants to stay at Swansea City next season.
Woodman has suggested that he would love to continue to play for Swansea, having spent the past two seasons on loan at the Welsh club from Newcastle United.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper was on loan at Swansea for the 2019-20 campaign and returned to the Liberty Stadium for the 2020-21 season.
The Chronicle reported this month that Arsenal want to sign the English goalkeeper in the summer transfer window.
The report added that Woodman does not want to be the second or the third-choice goalkeeper.
Woodman told The Northern Echo: “It’s probably been the best two years of my life playing here. I’ve fallen in love with the place and developed so much.
“I just wanted to get over the line for the city. I know how much they wanted us in that big league, so I’m absolutely gutted.
“I hope this isn’t the last game I play in a Swansea shirt. The main thing is to sort out my next step – if that’s in a Swansea shirt then brilliant, but if it’s not, I have to crack on and that’s football.”
Arsenal or Swansea City?
Swansea have failed in the Championship playoffs for the past two seasons, this time in the final against Brentford.
It must have been tough for Woodman to go so close to winning promotion to the Premier League with the Swans.
It is clear from Woodman’s aforementioned comments following the defeat to Brentford that he loves playing for the Swans.
The 24-year-old played 48 times in the Championship in 2020-21 and featured in 43 league games in 2019-20.
Bernd Leno is the first-choice goalkeeper at Arsenal, and Woodman would be his back-up.
Now, Leno could be sold by the Gunners and there is speculation on the future of the Germany International, but if that was to happen, would the North London club really make Woodman their number one goalkeeper, given his lack of experience of playing in the Premier League?
