Reading are seemingly on the verge of signing a player who could replace their Sheffield United and Aston Villa-linked star, John Swift.

That is according to Berkshire Live, which claims Josh Laurent will have a medical with the Royals on Tuesday ahead of a free transfer move from Shrewsbury Town.

That could spell good news for Swift suitors such as Sheffield United and Aston Villa, considering Laurent also plays in the former Chelsea man’s favoured central midfield role.

But Villa could still face disappointment, with The Star reporting that talks between United and Reading have reached an advanced stage and that Swift is keen to force through a move to Bramall Lane.

The latter player scored or made 17 goals for Reading across all competitions last season.

And that could leave Laurent – who made eight fewer contributions – with sizeable shoes to fill.

Aston Villa visit West Ham United on the Premier League’s final day and will lock horns again with Sheffield United next season, as long as neither of Watford or Bournemouth can better their result at the London Stadium.
