Player reportedly set for £3.5m Rangers transfer compared to Nemanja Matic by compatriot

Pitso Mosimane has raved about reported Rangers target Bongani Zungu to The Daily Record.

Rangers are set to sign Zungu from Amiens in the summer transfer window for a fee of £3.5 million, according to The Daily Record.

Gers manager Steven Gerrard himself has acknowledged the club’s interest in the 27-year-old South Africa international midfielder, as quoted in HeraldScotland.

Former South Africa international midfielder Mosimane worked with Zungu at Mamelodi Sundowns, and he has raved about the reported Rangers target, comparing him to Manchester United star Nemanja Matic and Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira.

Mosimane told The Daily Record: “He’s a holding midfielder, in the style of Vieira at Arsenal or Matic at Manchester United. Depending on the system Stevie G uses, he can also be used as an attacking No.8.

“He has a good body for that central midfield role. He isn’t short – he’s athletic and tactically disciplined.”

Mosimane added: “Bongani is the link man all good teams need and while he’s confident on the ball, he’s not the type who wants to be in the spotlight.

“He’s a good boy, an excellent team player and prefers to give the ball to those further up the pitch who deserve the limelight.”

Good signing for Rangers?

Zungu has done well at Amiens, and Mosimane’s aforementioned comments suggest that Rangers are reportedly about to sign a very capable midfielder who will make the Gers better in the middle of the park.

Rangers need a strong squad this season, as they aim to stop bitter Old Firm rivals Celtic from making it 10 Scottish Premiership titles in a row.

Meanwhile, Ayr United manager Mark Kerr has played down speculation linking the club with Rangers midfielder Jamie Barjonas.

The Daily Record reported last month of interest from Ayr in the 21-year-old Scottish youngster.

Kerr told The Ayr Advertiser: “I’ve got a good relationship with Rangers, so his availability is something we’d be able to talk about.

“But it’s not like anything will be done this week or the following week. It’s nowhere near that stage.

“Like most clubs in the Championship, you’d be daft not to look at him. Whether or not it’s the right thing for us right now, I’m not sure.

“Right now, all I’ll say is he’s a player most clubs will look at and we’re on the same boat, but nothing has been followed up.”
