Newcastle sold Joselu back in 2019 for a sum of just £2.5m after the Spaniard struggled at St James’ Park.

The 32-year-old scored just seven goals in 52 appearances for the Magpies from 2017 to 2019.

It was Alaves who took Joselu from Newcastle after he dropped to fourth choice behind Salomon Rondon, Ayoze Perez and Yoshinori Muto.

Now – after a move to Espanyol back in June – the old Newcastle striker is enjoying himself in front of goal.

What’s the story?

Well, despite averaging a goal every 7.4 games during his time at Newcastle, Joselu is now second in La Liga’s scoring charts.

Only Robert Lewandowski – one of the best strikers around – has outscored his tally of 11 goals in 20 appearances.

The Poland international has 15 La Liga goals to his name.

Joselu is level with Karim Benzema, holder of the Ballon d’Or, on 11 La Liga strikes.

Impressively, the Newcastle outcast has even outscored Real Madrid sensation Vinicius Junior, who has seven goals to his name in La Liga.

It has been a remarkable turnaround for Joselu back in Spain, and he deserves huge credit for rediscovering his goalscoring touch after a difficult time at Newcastle.

Joselu did well for Newcastle

Amid a time where Mike Ashley failed to invest much in Newcastle’s attacking options, Joselu held his own and did well for Newcastle despite failing to score many goals.

The Spaniard worked hard, led the line well with his hold up play, and seemed to care about the club at a time where it felt like Ashley and some of the players would rather have been anywhere else.

It is therefore pleasing to see Joselu enjoying himself at Espanyol, and if he manages to finish amongst the likes of Lewandowski and Benzema in the scoring charts, it would be a tremendous achievement.
