According to The Telegraph, Newcastle United are keen to bring Ivan Toney back to the club four years on from letting him go.
The striker was a product of the Tyneside club’s academy, but the likes of Alan Pardew, Steve McClaren and Rafa Benitez all failed to spot his potential, and eventually, he swapped St James’ Park for Peterborough.
The rest, as they say, is history. Toney dominated the Championship and League One, and he’s not doing too badly in the Premier League – he’s currently the top scoring player outside of the traditional big six clubs.
Interestingly, Toney said that leaving Newcastle was a blessing in disguise when he departed, but now, he could be on his way back.
What’s been said?
Toney spoke to Sky Sports about leaving Newcastle.
“It’s a game of opinions, if one manager doesn’t want you it doesn’t mean another doesn’t,” said Toney.
“It’s a blessing in disguise, I’ve come to Peterborough and found my feet again and doing well for myself.
“You just have to keep playing and have that belief that you can get to the top.
“It’s great having that confidence and the manager believing in you and your team-mates giving you the service you desire.”

Finally ready
Toney was absolutely right about his departure from Newcastle being a blessing in disguise, and now, he’s finally ready to return to United.
Think about it, if a young Toney had been thrown in the deep end and had to endure the pressure of leading the Newcastle line as they battled relegation from the Premier League or tried to win the Championship, he could have buckled.
With all due respect to Peterborough and Brentford, there isn’t as much pressure at those clubs as there is at Newcastle – especially for a striker, but now, Toney is ready to make that next step up.
