Michael Owen has joked that Liverpool icon, Steven Gerrard, could change his title to ‘player-manager’ for Aston Villa’s final game of the Premier League season against Manchester City.
The former striker added by saying that Gerrard can mastermind Villa to cause an upset at the Etihad, which in turn, helps Liverpool to the Premier League title.
As things stand, the title race is going to the final day, with Villa travelling to Manchester and the Reds locking horns with Bruno Lage’s Wolves at Anfield.
For Liverpool fans, the dream scenario would be for Philippe Coutinho to score the winning goal that pushes Liverpool over that trophy line.
When speaking about the Merseyside giants remaining matches, Owen made it clear that Jurgen Klopp has the tougher run-in compared to Pep Guardiola, as he told Premier League Productions (10/04/22 at 7:10 pm).
“I think every single one of Liverpool’s games are tough,” said Owen. “Wheres, Manchester City, I feel they have got three or four gimmies, especially their home games.
“Away at Leeds. They are just too good for Leeds. I think Wolves and West Ham are their toughest games, but I can see them winning every other one of those matches.
On Aston Villa and Gerrard having a say on the final day: “He could,” laughed Owen. “If it’s still going by then, he could.
“You might see him change his title to player-manager before the game, so you never know and Aston Villa are a strong side. In general, I think those fixtures favour Manchester City.”
Whilst Liverpool fans would love to see Gerrard celebrating on the touchline at the Etihad, in truth, it’s not going to happen.
Villa simply haven’t been good enough for far too long now, especially against the teams near the top of the table.
If the game was being played in Villa’s backyard, then it would have added more spice, no doubt.
But the Midlands outfit probably have more of a chance of getting something against Liverpool at home, than Man City on the final day.
