Watford striker Andre Gray has raved about reported summer Liverpool target Ismaila Sarr, as quoted in The Watford Observer.

Gray has outlined the importance of the 22-year-old to Watford and has hailed him as the Championship club’s Lionel Messi.

According to The Watford Observer, Liverpool were among the clubs who wanted to sign the 22-year-old winger in the summer of 2020.

The report has claimed that the defending Premier League champions ‘registered genuine interest’ in the Senegal international, and so did Manchester United and Crystal Palace.

Gray told The Watford Observer about Sarr: “The proof’s in the pudding with Isma. He’s a beast, simple as that. He’ll win us more games than than you can imagine.

“Even if he’s not scoring or assisting, if anyone watches games and understands football, they will understand the effect that he brings to the game.

“He’s a game winner, even when we’re not playing that well, he’s like our Messi. He is one of them players that you just give him the ball, and just let him do what he’s doing.”

Monitoring Ismaila Sarr

Just because Liverpool reportedly tried and failed to sign Sarr in the summer of 2020 does not mean that they should give up on securing his services in the future.

True, the Merseyside club signed Diogo Jota from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer of 2020, but there is always room for good players in the squad.

It would make sense for Liverpool to keep on monitoring the 22-year-old, perhaps for next summer, as it is unlikely that Watford will sell such a key player in the middle of the season as they aim to clinch promotion back to the Premier League.

According to WhoScored, Sarr has scored three goals and provided one assist in eight Championship matches for Watford so far this season.
