Former Leeds United youngster Leif Davis has capped a superb first season at Ipswich Town with a place in the League One Team of the Season as well as promotion to the Championship.

The contrast between the emotions in West Yorkshire and East Anglia could hardly be more distinct.

While Leeds look set to ‘break glass in case of emergency’ and parachute Sam Allardyce back into yet another relegation, many in Ipswich are still nursing the sort of joyous headaches that only promotion can bring.

Ipswich Town promoted while Leeds United fear relegation

The Tractor Boys steamrollered all before him during a glorious final stretch of the League One season; Saturday’s 6-0 thrashing of Exeter City a fitting way to cap a quite remarkable run of results for Kieran McKenna’s side.

13 wins in 14 games, by an aggregate score of 42-2.

No one in the division, meanwhile, can rival Leif Davis’ tally of 14 assists from left-back. This, plus three goals of his own, helped secure a well-deserved spot in the League One Team of the Season for a 23-year-old who left Leeds United to the tune of £1.5 million back in June 2022.

“It’s been really nice to see him progress through the season,” beams Ipswich team-mate Greg Leigh (Suffolk News). “He’s done so well and now he is racking up more and more assists.”

Most assists in the league

You can say that again. From his advanced, left-sided role, Davis has spent much of this season delivering like Postman Pat after a gallon of Red Bull, the likes of Freddie Ladapo and 29-goal top scorer Conor Chaplin dining out on his Michelin star service.

Newcastle-born Davis had his admirers at Elland Road. Marcelo Bielsa, to name but one. He obviously felt the need to depart after struggling to secure a regular place in the first-team picture. Who knows, Davis could soon be taking on his old Leeds team-mates in the Championship soon.

And judging by the responses to his joyous Instagram post on Saturday – Ipswich breaking free of their League One shackles after four years – Davis remains a very popular presence at his former employers.

“Great season fella,” Luke Ayling writes, joining Mateusz Klich and co in paying tribute to a man who has come on leaps and bounds at Portman Road. “Congratulations mate.”
