Nacho Monreal says that he would love to be playing for Arsenal under Mikel Arteta, as per his comments to the Guardian.

Monreal and Arteta were teammates at the Emirates Stadium for three years, before the current Gunners boss retired.

And the Spanish full-back claims that he is very curious to hear how Arteta is getting on in North London.

“I would have loved to have played under Arteta,” Monreal, who was sold by Arsenal last year, said.

“I spoke to Héctor about that. I had him as a teammate and I would have loved to see him as a coach; there’s that curiosity in me.

“But I chose another path and came to San Sebastián. I’m happy for me and him because things are going well.”

Whether Monreal would have got into this current Arsenal side is very much up for debate, but the Gunners could arguably have benefitted from his versatility.

Arsenal have struggled badly with injuries to their defenders this term, and Monreal’s ability to play right across the backline could have came in handy.

Instead he is currently playing for Real Sociedad, who currently lead the way in La Liga.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have failed to impress this term – with Arteta’s men sitting in a disappointing 12th spot, after taking just 13 points from their first nine games.
