Aston Villa will reportedly miss out on the signing of Pepe Reina, as Lazio are claimed to be on the verge of signing him.

Interest from Aston Villa

Earlier this month, Calciomercato reported that Villa have offered AC Milan goalkeeper Reina a two-year contract worth €2 million (£1.80 million) per year.

The 37-year-old goalkeeper spent the second half of the past season on loan at Villa from Milan.

The former Liverpool star played his role for the Villans in their successful quest to avoid the dreaded drop to the Championship.

There is no surprise, then, that Villa want to secure the services of Reina on a permanent contract, but it seems that the Spaniard is joining Lazio instead.

Imminent Lazio transfer

According to Gianlucadimarzio.com, Lazio are looking for a back-up goalkeeper to Thomas Strakosha and have identified Reina as a transfer target.

It has been reported that the veteran will sign a two-year contract with Lazio, who have reached an agreement with Serie A rivals Milan.

Decision makes sense

Lazio finished fourth in the Serie A table in 2019-20 and will play in the Champions League next season.

It makes sense for Reina to join Lazio even as a back-up instead of making a permanent move to Villa, who could be involved in a Premier League relegation dogfight again in 2020-21.
