Arsenal’s reported quest to sign Manchester United attacking midfielder Angel Gomes seems to be heading towards bitter disappointment.

The Daily Mail reported in May of interest in Gomes from Arsenal, with the 19-year-old’s contract at Premier League rivals United running out at the end of this month.

However, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said that the England Under-20 international has been offered a new deal by the Red Devils, and that the youngster will commit his future to the Premier League giants.

Solskjaer told The Telegraph about Gomes: “He’s a top kid we’ve had at the club for so many years.

“We’ve offered him a deal and hopefully he’ll take that and if not I wish him all the best. From what I understand it’s not too far away — if not we’ll wish him all the best.”

Missing out

Gomes has had injury problems and has made only a handful of first-team appearances for United so far in his career.

However, United are a big club and are a global brand, and if Gomes stays at Old Trafford, then he could get chances in the first team, as Solskjaer has been giving opportunities to talented young players who are hungry and want to progress.

Leaving United for Arsenal this summer would pose the same challenge that he would face at Old Trafford, that is, a regular place in the starting lineup.
