Rangers have this morning announced that Jon McLaughlin has signed a new contract at Ibrox.
The Scotland international has extended his deal in Glasgow until the summer of 2024.
McLaughlin has proven himself a brilliant deputy for Allan McGregor since arriving at Rangers 18 months ago, to the point where he was part of the squad for Euro 2020.
He has started six Premiership outings for the Gers this season but hasn’t played in this competition since October.
It’s a timely announcement on the back of McGregor’s mistake in Rangers’ draw at Ross County on Saturday.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s outfit drew 3-3 and the hosts equalised when the veteran goalkeeper fumbled a routine cross, allowing Jordan White to level up the contest at 1-1.
Here’s how some light Blues supporters reacted to McLaughlin’s extension:
Not the answer
Long term, Rangers still need some new goalkeepers.
McGregor turns 40 tomorrow and that means that Van Bronckhorst’s top two goalkeepers are a combined 74 years of age.
Obviously goalkeepers have greater longevity than players in other positions but, even still, their combined age means that the Gers really must invest in a new option this summer.
McLaughlin will feel confident in staking his claim, particularly if McGregor continues to commit howlers, but neither one is the answer for Rangers long term.
