Steve Bruce has admitted that it is ‘very difficult’ for him to praise Leeds United on their promotion because of his Manchester United connections.

The Newcastle boss stated that the Premier League will ‘benefit’ with Leeds in it and it has been ‘quite remarkable’ that they have spent 16 years outside of England’s top-flight, as he told Sky Sports News (18/07/20 at 7:05 pm).

Leeds will be looking to renew a lot of rivalries next season, including against Manchester United. Bruce knows full well what it’s like to come against the might of the Yorkshire outfit.

Whilst it’s ‘difficult’ for Bruce to speak so highly of Leeds making a return, he didn’t stop in congratulating them on their recent success.

“For a club of that stature to go 16 years is quite remarkable,” said Bruce. “To be in the Championship [for that long] for a club like Leeds United.

“So, what has it been? 15 managers? Umpteen players. I think the Premier League will be better with Leeds United in it, especially when supporters are coming back in because they’re a unique lot as well, who have been fearlessly loyal to the club.

“I think the Premier League will benefit from Leeds United. For me to say that, with my Manchester United hat on, is very difficult.”

Bruce has faced Leeds on numerous occasions during his time in the Championship.

From his time at Hull City to Aston Villa, he knows what it’s like to stand on the touchline at Elland Road.

But next season will be a different story. Leeds will be a different animal under Marcelo Bielsa, the only crying shame is that the Elland Road faithful won’t be allowed to pack out their stadium for some while yet.
