Who had the better of a record breaking January deadline day?

It was another record breaking transfer window as Premier League clubs spent big to improve their squads. Six clubs broke their transfer record including Liverpool and Arsenal.

The 2018 winter window saw the highest amount of money spent on deadline day, breaking 2011’s record which saw Fernando Torres and Andy Carroll move seven years ago.

But which clubs did the best business on the final day?

Arsenal

Arsenal broke their transfer record on deadline day to bring Pierre Emerick Aubameyang to the Emirates Stadium from Borussia Dortmund. The Gabon international became the Gunners second winter signing alongside his former Dortmund teammate Henrikh Mkhitaryan to lift the spirits after losing Alexis Sanchez.

Arsene Wenger has signed one of the best strikers in Europe without any doubt. He has unbelievable pace, he is good physically and he is a clinical finisher. Aubameyang scored 40 goals in 46 games last season, while his overall Dortmund record stands at 141 goals in 213. The only thing that could have made deadline day better for Arsenal would have been the addition of Jonny Evans.

Tottenham Hotspur

Just one man in the door at Tottenham but they have added some real quality. Lucas Moura arrived for just £23million according to the BBC. In today’s inflated market that has to go down as a bargain for someone of his ability.

The 25-year-old scored 19 times for Paris Saint-Germain last season and will give Spurs something they don’t really have – a natural winger.

Chelsea

Chelsea were quite busy on deadline day but it proved to be a successful one. The Blues followed up the signing of Emerson Palmieri the day before with the capture of Olivier Giroud from Arsenal. Again that must be seen as a bargain in today’s market for a player who has netted 105 goals over a five-and-a-half year stint in England.

He is probably the best backup striker available to them and is an upgrade on the likes of Andy Carroll and Peter Crouch, who were linked with moves to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea also let Michy Batshuayi join Borussia Dortmund on loan for the remainder of the season as the Belgian was unfancied by Antonio Conte.
