Southampton desperately need more attacking options to pull away from the bottom three.

Southampton look set to miss out on former player Theo Walcott, who is set to sign for Everton. Sky Sports are reporting that the Arsenal forward has passed a medical at Goodison Park and is close to completing a £20million move.

It has come as a blow for Mauricio Pellegrino who was looking to bring Walcott back to St Mary’s to add more pace and a goal threat to his team who sit precariously in 17th place.

However there is still time for the Argentine to bring in more attack minded players. We have picked out three alternatives who the Saints could bring in this month.

Guido Carrillo

Monaco forward Guido Carrillo is now reportedly top of Pellegrino’s wish list according to Sky Sports, who say the 26-year-old is valued at around £15million.

The Argentine, who worked under Pellegrino at Estudiantes, has scored 20 goals since joining Monaco in 2015 and has five to his name this term. He is six foot two, so he has the physical presence needed up front and will slot in perfectly while Charlie Austin is injured but he is also someone the manager knows and trusts.

Nicolas Gaitan

Argentine attacking midfielder Nicolas Gaitan has really struggled at Atletico Madrid. The 29-year-old has played just 12 times so far this season and has fallen out of favour under Simeone. Talk Sport report the player has been offered to Inter Milan, however they are now looking elsewhere.

Gaitan was excellent for Benfica where he scored 41 goals in six seasons and was linked with a move to Manchester United. He can play out wide or just behind the striker and would add flair to the Saints forward line.

Sky Sports have linked him with a move to Saints and Swansea City but no approach has been made yet by Pellegrino.

Daniel Sturridge

Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge is desperate to get more playing time as he still holds hopes of pushing for a place in England’s World Cup squad.

He has featured just nine times in the league but when fit, he is a lethal finisher with a very good goals to game ratio which is exactly what the Saints need. The Daily Star report that Sturridge is odds on to join Inter Milan, so Pellegrino would need to act quickly if he is to bring the 28-year-old to the club.
