The midfielder looks to be coming to the end of his time at Sunderland.

Sunderland have offered to cancel the contract of midfielder Jack Rodwell as reported in the Daily Mirror.

The midfielder will be allowed to leave for nothing if he relinquishes his £5.4million in wages and will be free to join another club.

Sunderland are keen to get the 26-year-old, who promised so much as a youngster at Everton, off the wage bill but where next for a man who was tipped to do so well for England and who Manchester City paid around £15million for?

HITC sports assesses the possible destinations which could see Rodwell revive his career.

Celtic FC

The Sunderland Echo report that Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has been monitoring the midfielders situation for some time now.

Celtic will want to bolster their squad ahead of the second half of the campaign, especially with European Football returning in February. It would be a good move for Rodwell, who would still be playing at a huge club and it can be argued that the Scottish Premiership is not as gruelling as the Championship.

Head of Recruitment at Celtic Park, Lee Congerton, was also the man who signed him for the Black Cats in 2014.

The MLS

Plenty of British based players head over to the MLS towards the end of their careers. It is hard to believe Rodwell is only 26, but his career in England has hit a brick wall after a horrible record of injuries.

A change of scenery, culture and weather may do him the world of good and it would be a place where he can play regular football in what’s still a competitive league. It could act as a stepping stone back to the Premier League if he’s to impress.

Premier League Strugglers

A move back to the Premier League should not be ruled out for Rodwell given he has spent the majority of his career in that league.

With injuries mounting, there are plenty of clubs who could do with more options and a free transfer would not go amiss.

Swansea City, West Bromwich Albion, Huddersfield Town and Brighton and Hove Albion could all benefit from an extra body in midfield and a bit of experience to help pull away from relegation. David Moyes wants to bring in midfielders to balance his squad up and he gave Rodwell his debut at Everton where Rodwell enjoyed his most successful spell to date.
