Tottenham Hotspur could be looking for a back-up keeper in the summer.
Tottenham Hotspur’s back-up goalie Michel Vorm is out of contract in the summer and could be on his way to Feyenoord, according to Voetbal International in Holland.
The Dutchman has made 35 appearances for Spurs, including 11 in the league, since joining in July 2014 but appears likely to head back to his homeland at the end of the season.
That would leave Spurs with just Hugo Lloris and Paulo Gazzaniga, so HITC Sport looks at three ‘keepers Tottenham should look at to act as Lloris’s next understudy.
Alex McCarthy
Alex McCarthy is a ‘keeper who is very familiar with the back-up role. He has played just 18 matches since 2014 despite representing QPR, Crystal Palace and Southampton during that period.
Recently, he ha wrestled the number one jersey off Fraser Forster and has put in some solid displays for Southampton and looks poised to remain first choice for the rest of the season. The chance to play for one of the big six will surely be attractive to him and, with Spurs probably playing European football next season, that will at least give him more opportunities for game time.
Lukasz Fabianski
Lukasz Fabianski has been one of Swansea City’s best and most consistent players over the last couple of seasons. The Polish international is an established Premier League ‘keeper who will feel he deserves another crack at a big club.
The only concern with this one is that Fabianski is a former Arsenal player, where he was a solid back-up option for the Gunners. The Pole is a certain upgrade on Vorm and the chance to play in Europe again will surely be hard for Fabianski to turn down.
Diego Lopez
Mauricio Pochettino’s old club Espanyol possess highly experienced stopper Diego Lopez in their ranks. The Spaniard has won La Liga and the Champions League over two spells at Real Madrid. He has also had spells at Sevilla, Villarreal and AC Milan.
Lopez is now playing second fiddle to former Spurs loanee Pau Lopez and the 36-year-old may want one last move.
Given all the cup competitions and European challenges, he would have more chances of playing at Tottenham even as second-choice stopper.
