Danny Ings could yet remain at Anfield despite a number of clubs interested in him.
Newcastle United will be looking to bring in a striker in the January transfer window with both their leading marksmen (Dwight Gayle and Joselu) scoring a meagre three goals each so far this season.
The Magpies have been linked with a move for Liverpool forward Danny Ings; however, according to reports in the Chronicle, that deal is now unlikely and the England striker may now remain at Anfield.
Rafael Benitez can’t dwell on that disappointment and needs to look elsewhere to bolster his attacking options. The loan market will probably be more feasible for Newcastle given their ownership uncertainty, so here are three strikers they could potentially bring in on loan.
Daniel Sturridge
Daniel Sturridge scored 35 goals in his first 49 Liverpool games. Since then he’s only managed 28 goals in his next 84 games. His time at Anfield has been ravaged by injury and more recently, Klopp favouring Roberto Firmino, Mo Salah and even Dominic Solanke.
He has started just five times this term and according to the Sun, he is desperate to leave to get minutes in the hope of making England’s World Cup squad. He would certainly add goals and firepower to Newcastle so would suit both parties.
Islam Slimani
Newcastle have been linked with Leicester City’s Islam Slimani for some time now and the Chronicle report that the Magpies have lodged a loan bid for the Algerian. It’s not quite worked out for Slimani at the King Power Stadium since his £28m move last summer.
He has scored just 12 goals in all competitions since August 2016 and has not been helped by three managerial changes and the form of Jamie Vardy and Shinji Okazaki. Leicester’s style doesn’t quite suit him but he would look a better fit under Benitez and would certainly get more than the two Premier League starts that he has had with the Foxes.
Fernando Torres
Fernando Torres and Rafael Benitez worked together at Liverpool and the pair could well be re-united on Tyneside. The Sun report that the Spaniard wants to leave Atletico Madrid and return to the Premier League.
Torres was already competing with Antoine Griezmann and Kevin Gameiro for a place in the team, but Diego Costa’s return has pushed him further down the pecking order so the club may be willing to let him go out on loan.
The 33-year-old has enjoyed a revival in the Spanish capital after his Chelsea nightmare and Benitez would be signing a man he trusts. This deal would depend a lot on wages for it to happen.
