Mauricio Pellegrino desperately needs to sign attacking players this month.
Southampton are trying to sign Monaco striker Guido Carrillo according to Sky Sports.
The Argentine, who has worked under Mauricio Pellegrino at Estudiantes, is one of the club’s top targets as they look to add to their goal-shy front-line.
Carrillo is not the only forward Saints have been linked with as Sky Sports also reports that there is interest in Atletico Madrid’s Kevin Gameiro, although no contact has been made as yet.
Atletico seem keen to let him go and Saints should not dismiss a player of his quality becoming available. The 30-year-old has won three Europa Leagues with Sevilla and also has a Ligue 1 title with Paris Saint-Germain to his name. He has also got a lot of Champions League experience.
His goal record is much better than Carrillo’s. Gameiro is more of a goal poacher compared to the Monaco man who is a target man.
Both players could provide something different to Southampton, but Gameiro ultimately is the better finisher. He scored 16 times for Atletico last season, while his highest scoring tally came during the 2015-16 season at Sevilla where he netted 29 times.
A record like that is something Southampton cannot turn their noses up at. Gameiro’s style is quite similar to Manolo Gabbiadini’s but things have not worked out as well as hoped for the Italian.
The transfer fee may be slightly higher but Southampton need goals to stay up and they are more likely to come from Gameiro, who would be a real coup if they can persuade him to join.
