Sheffield Wednesday’s season is in need of revitalising and they could be in the market for a centre-half.

Jos Luhukay will be hoping to add to his squad this January after he replaced Carlos Carvalhal earlier this month. The Owls have conceded 11 goals in their last six matches, so defensive reinforcements should be high on their transfer agenda.

Wednesday came close to signing Johan Djourou from Hamburger SV according to the Sheffield Star, but the deal broke down and they instead signed Joost Van Aken which has not quite worked out as well as hoped.

Glenn Loovens and Tom Lees are their only other defensive options, so should the Owls be looking at someone like Tommy Elphick from Aston Villa?

The 30-year-old was frozen out under Steve Bruce at the start of the season but has found himself back in the fold over the last month and has looked solid and back to his best.

Elphick won the Championship title as captain of AFC Bournemouth back in 2015 so would bring much needed leadership and promotion winning experience to the Wednesday back line.

Due to Villa’s injury problems at the back, they will need to sign before they can sell, but Wednesday should keep a close eye on the situation. Elphick will feel he has a point to prove and a lot of the Owls players will share the same sentiments after a poor season where another promotion push was expected.

The Villa man should come cheap, which would take away the risk element and would bring them an accomplished player at Championship level.
