Tim Krul was a real fan favourite at St James’ Park.
Newcastle United goalkeepers Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot have both failed to make the number one shirt their own at St James’ Park this season.
Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez has rotated between the pair and has also been frustrated in his pursuit of a new goalkeeper so far this window. The Newcastle Chronicle report that the Magpies tried to sign Sparta Prague stopper Martin Dubravka but the Czech side are not keen to let their man leave.
Their only other option is youngster Freddie Woodman, who the Chronicle say is keen to go out on loan, but Newcastle did have an alternative at the start of the season.
Seasoned campaigner Tim Krul was allowed to leave at the end of the summer transfer window and went to Brighton & Hove Albion, where he is back-up to Matthew Ryan.
In an interview with the Times, the Dutchman revealed that Benitez told him that he would not be in the Spaniard’s plans despite his plea to be given a chance by Benitez. He also said that he owed everything to Newcastle and felt he was treated disrespectfully.
The Dutchman made 185 appearances for Newcastle over a 10-year spell. He helped the side finish fifth in 2012 and he also played in the Europa League during the 2012-13 campaign.
In a match against Tottenham Hotspur in November 2013, Krul produced one of the best goalkeeping displays in Premier League history, pulling off 14 big saves.
Despite recent injury woes, he still has plenty to offer. Great ability, great experience and also leadership qualities.
Krull has been capped eight times by Holland and reached the World Cup semi-finals with his country in 2014. With the current doubts about Elliot and Darlow, he would have probably been given an opportunity and who knows what could have happened.
