Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot have both been competing for the shirt but neither have been convincing enough to claim it for good.
Darlow has been the man between the sticks lately, while Elliot has been sidelined with a thigh injury but his position has been questioned after he scored an own goal against Burnley.
Manager Rafael Benitez did bring in a ‘keeper during the transfer window as Martin Dubravka arrived on loan from Sparta Prague for the rest of the season.
It appears he has come in as cover but should Benitez consider starting him? The 29-year-old does have good experience behind him and he could be the answer to Newcastle’s problems.
Dubravka has been capped nine times by Slovakia. He produced a man of the match performance, albeit in defeat when Slovakia played Scotland back in October in a World Cup qualifier. He has also played Champions League football during his time at MSK Zilina so he knows what it takes to compete at the highest level.
He is comfortable as a ball-playing ‘keeper, as the Chronicle suggests, and that is exactly what Benitez has been looking for.
He has now started to establish himself as the number one stopper in Slovakia and, should he be given the opportunity, he could do similar at St. James’ Park.
