Should Alan Pardew be facing questions about his future?

West Bromwich Albion’s win-less run has now stretched to 20 games.

West Bromwich Albion broke local rivals Aston Villa’s record of 19 games without a win after defeat to West Ham United at the London Stadium earlier this month.

The result left West Brom 19th in the Premier League on 16 points, four adrift of safety. Alan Pardew has been in charge for eight of the 20 win-less games with a record of four draws and four defeats.

His side have only scored four goals so far in his tenure, one goal fewer than Tony Pulis managed in his final eight games in charge. Goal-scoring was an area Baggies fans wanted to see improved after Pulis’s defensive tactics but Pardew has not managed to turn the tide thus far.

While draws against Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton are encouraging, losing to relegation rivals is what West Brom can afford to do the least, yet it is exactly what they have been doing.

Since the 56-year-old took charge, Albion have lost to Swansea City, Stoke City and West Ham United who were all in the bottom six and would have been games highlighted as must-win.

Pardew was always going to be a gamble. West Brom are trying to change their philosophy and style of play mid-season which does not always work. The club therefore need to take responsibility for making that decision, so it is only fair that Pardew is given more than eight games.

That is not to say that his job is safe though. The football is still not entertaining and there has not really been a standout performance. Albion’s next five league games are against Brighton and Hove Albion (H), Everton and Manchester City (A), Southampton (H) and Chelsea (A).

If West Brom still have not won a game after that run then it will be 13 win less matches for Pardew. For now, calls for Pardew’s head are harsh, however questions should rightly be asked of him if he fails to pick up a victory against Brighton and Southampton (it is hard to see Albion beating City, Chelsea and Everton away), then his position will surely be untenable.
