David Moyes could be about to shake things up at the heart of West Ham’s defence

West Ham United manager David Moyes is preparing to lodge a bid for Swansea City defender Alfie Mawson in January according to the Guardian.
The Hammers will fancy their chances of signing the former Barnsley man for around £20m, and with Swansea currently bottom of the league and manager-less, a move to the London Stadium where things are gradually improving may be tempting for the centre back.

West Ham aren’t exactly short of options at the back, however, as they have Winston Reid, James Collins, Angelo Ogbonna and Jose Fonte already in that position.
And Fonte may well be the fall guy if Mawson is to join. The Portuguese is 34 years-old and he hasn’t quite established himself in the team, struggling with injuries since his £8m move from Southampton. This season, the Euro 2016 winner has played just eight times with his last appearance coming against Crystal Palace in October where he limped off injured.

West Ham co-owner David Sullivan revealed in an interview with the London Evening Standard that his children begged him not to sign Fonte, comments which are thought to have unsettled the defender.
A move may be better for both parties, and Sullivan also stated in that interview that West Ham will be looking to sign younger players. Mawson is 23.
The English defender has played 48 times for Swansea in all competitions, scoring six times.
