Lucas Moura or Javier Pastore: Who is the better option for Tottenham?

It could be an interesting end to the transfer window for Tottenham.

Tottenham Hotspur have shown an interest in two Paris Saint-Germain stars this window.

The Sun report that Mauricio Pochettino has met with Brazilian winger Lucas Moura ahead of a proposed £25million move from the French capital, while Gianluca Di Marzio claims Spurs have also lodged a bid for Argentine midfielder Javier Pastore, although they face strong competition from Inter Milan for his signature.

With the Champions League returning next month, Pochettino needs to add a bit more depth to his squad if Spurs are to maintain their top four challenge and go far in the Champions League, but which of the two does he need the most?

In terms of position, Moura is more accustomed to playing out wide while Pastore prefers to play through the middle. Spurs are lacking a player of Moura’s style more than Pastore’s.

Tottenham do not have many out-and-out wingers. Erik Lamela is their most natural wide man but he has just returned from a long injury layoff. Heung-min Son has also played out wide for Spurs but he can play in all of the front four positions.

The former Sao Paulo man gives them a creative outlet out wide. He is an explosive player who has great pace, so the way he plays on the counter attack will suit Pochettino’s style.

Pastore is quite versatile, too. He is known for his creativity and technical ability so naturally is suited to playing an attacking role behind the striker. Tottenham already have Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli who play that role.

Tottenham’s central midfield options include Moussa Sissoko, Eric Dier, Moussa Dembele, Victor Wanyama and Harry Winks. Dier, Wanyama and Dembele are more defensive minded and Pastore has often played as a deep-lying play-maker, which is surely the only position Pochettino can fit him in.

In seven seasons Pastore has scored 44 goals and bagged 54 assists for PSG while, in six years, Lucas has netted 45 times. The Brazilian is still only 25 and still has so much potential. He provides something Tottenham lack and will not just be a backup, whereas Pastore, 28, may find himself on the bench at Spurs or even played out of position.
