Is Everton’s Cenk Tosun being written off too early?

Everton’s new striker Cenk Tosun has had a tough time on Merseyside since arriving at the beginning of January.

The striker has featured just three times for the Toffees since his arrival and was an unused substitute during their 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace at the weekend.

So what has happened to Everton’s big money signing? Tosun arrived from Besiktas having scored 38 goals in the last 18 months. He is strong, six foot tall and looked a good fit, but it has not quite worked out for him so far.

Sam Allardyce told Sky Sports that the forward is struggling to adapt to the pace of the English Premier League. Allardyce also went on to say that he will use Tosun more once Everton’s Premier League status is mathematically secured.

It seems a bit unfair to judge the Turkish international based on just two starts. He failed to make an impact but most players need time after joining a new team to adjust to the style of play and get to know their teammates.

In recent weeks, Oumar Niasse has lead the line for Everton and has netted twice in his last four games. Theo Walcott and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have also been in decent form, which has not helped Tosun’s cause.

He has already been labelled as a flop, but that seems harsh given the lack of game time and constant change of personnel in the Everton line-up.

Allardyce will need to experiment with his team to see which players are best suited to the 26-year-old’s game but, as he said himself, his first focus is getting results to ensure Everton are still in the Premier League next season, which should not be too far away given their current position and recent home record.
