The 29-year-old could be set for a return to England after leaving Sunderland last summer
Victor Anichebe is being linked with a move to Bolton Wanderers according to the Sunderland Echo.
The striker, who left Sunderland last summer, is a free agent after leaving Chinese club Beijing Enterprises and looks set for a return to England.
Bolton lost top scorer Gary Madine to Cardiff City on transfer deadline day and although they brought in Zac Clough and Tyler Walker, the Trotters want to add a more experienced head up front as they try to make up for the goals they lost.
Gary Madine joined Cardiff City in January having scored 10 goals for the club this season.
Anichebe has the potential to be a boost to Bolton’s survival hopes. The former Everton striker isn’t really a prolific goalscorer but he’s never played below the Premier League so he may score more in the Championship.
He spent last season at the Stadium of Light where an injury effectively ruined his season but he was actually playing well for the Black Cats. He scored three goals for the club and Sunderland won each time he found the net and he was a big miss during his absence.
Anichebe has the physical capabilities to succeed in the Championship. His hold up play is probably his strong point so he can help provide for the likes of Adam Le Fondre, Clough and Walker.
Any injuries to a forward will cause Bolton problems so having someone with Anichebe’s experience in their ranks will do no harm at all and he’d be the only on in that team who is a similar style of striker to what Madine was.
It must remembered that Madine wasn’t really known as a prolific striker in the Championship before he signed for Bolton so Phil Parkinson could be the man to get the best out of the Nigerian.
