Lionel Messi has labelled Aston Villa star Emi Martinez as one of the best goalkeepers in the world. And supporters on social media are not too pleased about the comments.
Speaking to TNT Sport after Argentina’s 3-0 win against Uruguay, the PSG superstar claimed that the 29-year-old goalkeeper is one of the top players in his position in world football.
Martinez was signed by Villa last year and has since embarked on a meteoric rise for both club and country. The former Arsenal star is one of the top keepers in the Premier League after a brilliant debut campaign for Dean Smith’s side.
Moreover, Martinez is now the clear number one goalkeeper for Argentina. And Messi is a huge fan of the Villa shot-stopper, with the duo being key to the South American nation’s Copa America win earlier in the summer.
The football legend said on Martinez: “Dibu [Emi] Martinez has been fundamental. When we are defending, he always delivers.”
Moreover, Messi added: “He has established himself in goal, and now we have one of the best goalkeepers in the world.”
Villa fans fume that Messi comments could lead to interest in Martinez
Indeed, you would think such high praise from a player as brilliant as Messi would be well received, but Villa fans on social media now fear that these comments could lead to interest in Martinez from rival clubs.
