Premier League newcomers Aston Villa reportedly agreed a £9.3m deal to sign Danish winger Pione Sisto from La Liga outfit Celta Vigo.
Aston Villa did everything they could to lure Pione Sisto to the Midlands before the transfer window slammed shut.
According to Faro de Vigo, the Premier League newcomers offered the Danish international a personal trip around Birmingham in an attempt to sell the sights and the sounds of the Second City to an explosive left-winger who had clearly emerged as one of the summer’s top targets.
Marca even claims that Villa had a £9.3 million bid accepted by Celta Vigo with the La Liga outfit keen to cash in on Sisto before the time ran out. But the 24-year-old had no interest in becoming Villa’s 13th signing of an extraordinary transfer window, turning down a £20,000-a-week deal to stay at the Balaidos.
Now, he can’t get a start for love nor money. And he was warned too.
There’s a reason why Celta wanted to sell. With Denis Suarez coming in from Barcelona, they had a new left-sided midfielder in their ranks with the former Arsenal loanee representing a natural upgrade on Sisto, an exciting yet erratic forward for whom consistency remains maddeningly elusive.
Sisto hasn’t started any of Celta’s nine La Liga games this season. His five substitute appearances have totalled just 46 minutes and he’s been left out of the squad altogether on another four occasions.
According to Todo Fichajes, Celta are now planning to sell him in January.
They say loyalty is dead in football and Sisto cannot really be faulted for wanting to stay where he’s comfortable. But sometimes you have no choice but accept that it’s time to move on.
