Newcastle United are set to sign Anthony Gordon for £40m, and we can’t help but feel that the Magpies are not only being ripped off here, but PIF are straying from their tried and tested transfer policy.

The Magpies have had great success in recent times buying quality players with good attitudes, and Gordon doesn’t seem to fit into either of these categories.

It’s clear that Anthony Gordon is a talented player, but at £40m, his price tag seems excessive, especially considering his lack of top-level experience and inconsistent performances for Everton.

Newcastle may be rich beyond comprehension, but £40m is a huge sum of money for a player who has yet to prove himself consistently at the highest level. Simply put, this seems like a risky move for Newcastle.

It’s not just Gordon’s performances that raise concerns, but also his attitude. The fact that he recently missed training with Everton without permission is a red flag, and it’s a concern that he could bring that attitude to Newcastle, especially if he isn’t granted a role as a key player from the off.

It’s also worth considering that Newcastle already have a number of talented players in the attacking wide positions, such as Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin, who have been performing well this season.

In the context of FFP, spending £40m on Gordon could also limit Newcastle’s ability to bring in other key players in the future, and while it won’t strain the club’s finances due to the vast wealth of the ownership, FFP constraints are still an issue.

Newcastle seemed to know better than anyone that success in football is not just about buying expensive players, but also about building a team with the right mentality and attitude, but Gordon just doesn’t seem to be that type of footballer at this moment in time.

He may prove us all wrong, but right now, £40m on Gordon looks like PIF’s most reckless Newcastle signing yet.
