There’s no doubt that Newcastle United are getting far better as a result of their January business.

Newcastle signed four players during the winter transfer window, like Chris Wood, Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn and, of course, Bruno Guimaraes.

And Eddie Howe’s outfit are now six games unbeaten following Saturday’s 1-1 draw at West Ham United.

However, it was another frustrating outing for Chris Wood, who is now five Premier League appearances – or 450 minutes in total – without scoring for the St James’s Park outfit.

And is it worth considering whether Newcastle signed the wrong striker?

Better option?

Prior to the New Zealand international, the Magpies were linked with signing Wout Weghorst [Kicker] who, ironically, replaced Wood at Burnley last month.

And the Tynesiders might’ve been better off getting him instead of Wood.

Weghorst opened his account for the Clarets on Saturday by scoring in the 3-0 win at Brighton & Hove Albion, giving him 37 goal involvements in league competition since the start of last season.

The former Wolfsburg powerhouse is, like Wood, a towering and physical specimen of a striker.

However, he only cost £12 million – £13 million less than what was splashed on Wood.

The former Leeds marksman is a very good striker but, considering the numbers – transfer fees and goals – perhaps Newcastle should’ve concentrated on getting the big Dutchman.
