Ever the outspoken pantomime villain – Arsenal fan Piers Morgan has claimed the Manchester United boss needs Robin van Persie to save his job.

It was just over a month ago when Robin van Persie announced he was intending not to sign a new contract with Arsenal that Piers Morgan launched into an infamous Twitter rant blaming everybody from Ivan Gazidis to Arsene Wenger to the Dutchman himself.

Now as the spectre of a move to Manchester United looms for the Dutchman, the outspoken former tabloid editor has been causing consternation with his outspoken views once more, this time on Sir Alex Ferguson, a man he has repeatedly made public his disdain for.

Here’s what he had to say last night on Twitter:

“United got stiffed by PSG on Moura, so let’s stiff them on @Persie_Official too. Hold him to his contract Arsene, Play tough #Arsenal”

“Ferguson lost Ronaldo & Tevez, and missed out on Moura, Hazard & Nasri. He’s desperate for @Persie_Official to save his job.”

“Hold @Persie_Official & Song to their contracts. With them, and the exciting new squad we’re amassing, we can compete again. #Arsenal”

“Sell @Persie_Official to United and lose Song too, and we’ll be in the same position as last few years – a trophyless, selling club.”

“This is a defining moment for Kroenke & Gazidis – if they sell @Persie_Official to Utd, they’ll confirm they’re not interested in trophies.”

He was rebutted by United supporters angry at his aspersions, but as you can imagine by now, abuse to one of Britain’s most irritating football fans is now water off a duck’s back.

Meanwhile Sir Alex Ferguson last night confirmed the club had indeed made a bid for Robin van Persie, but said the bid had stalled with Arsenal currently stonewalling.

With the race to kick-off just over a week away, you imagine this is one saga which will have to be resolved quickly one way or another.

What do you think of Morgan’s comments? Where will Van Persie end up?
