Arsenal would have won the Premier League if they signed Cristiano Ronaldo in January – according to Piers Morgan.
The 58-year-old believes the Portugal international would have provided Mikel Arteta with the experience needed to see out Arsenal’s title challenge against Manchester City.
When making his point, Piers Morgan revealed an interesting bit of information about Cristiano Ronaldo and Arsenal.
What’s the story?
Well, Morgan – who is close to the Portuguese superstar – wrote on Twitter that Ronaldo was keen to join Arsenal in January after Manchester United decided to terminate his contract.
The Englishman wrote: “Mock all you like, but if we’d signed Ronaldo when he left Utd, until the end of the season – as he was keen to do by the way – we would have won the League. He knows how to win major trophies, and how to score goals when it really matters.”
It was Al-Nassr who eventually signed the five-time Ballon d’Or winner following his departure from Old Trafford.
Ronaldo has since scored 12 goals in 13 Saudi Pro League appearances, taking his total tally for the 2022/23 campaign so far to 15 goals, having netted three for Manchester United before leaving.
Arsenal were right to ignore Ronaldo
In our view, Morgan is wrong – Ronaldo would not have helped Arsenal’s title challenge.
The 38-year-old is not the player he used to be, and while he obviously has experience of winning titles, it would have been a short-term, panicked decision by Arteta to sign him.
Furthermore, it could be argued that Ronaldo would have caused more problems for Arsenal than he would’ve solved, based on his conduct in the final days of his second spell at Manchester United.
Drama and soap opera antics seem to follow the Funchal-born striker wherever he goes at this stage of his career, something that would have potentially distracted Arsenal in their title race instead of helped.
There are many reasons why Arsenal let the Premier League title slip this season, but the decision to ignore Ronaldo is not one of them.
