Things did not pan out as expected for Aston Villa’s summer signing Pierluigi Gollini after he joined the club in the summer.

The young goalie was signed from Hellas Verona by Roberto di Matteo in the summer. However, he struggled to adapt to English football and lost his place in the starting XI to back-up Mark Bunn under new Villa boss Steve Bruce. When Sam Johnstone was brought in the writing was on the wall and Gollini headed out on loan to Atalanta.

But things have not gotten any better.

He would have been hoping to replace Marco Sportiello, who had joined Fiorentina, but Atalanta also signed Albanian number one Etrit Berisha on loan from Lazio and he has taken over the number one spot.

It was reported this week by La Gazzetta that Atalanta are now all set to sign Berisha on a permanent deal in the summer as they look to build on what has been an excellent season in Serie A.

Gollini would therefore find himself playing second fiddle yet again if he did remain at Atatlanta for next season.

Aston Villa’s young Italian has a big summer ahead.
