Rafa Benitez and the rest of the Newcastle squad returned to action on Friday.

Rafa Benitez and the rest of the Newcastle United squad returned to pre-season training on Friday as The Toon look to replicate the successes of 2017-18 – but one of Benitez’s flops also returned to training despite recent reports.
Newcastle finished in a lofty tenth position in the Premier League last season, and will be looking to match such a finish or indeed go better and reach the top half of the league table next term.

Out-of-favour goalkeeper Matz Sels turned up at Darsley Park along with the rest of the Newcastle squad, as pictured by Evening Chronicle journalist Lee Ryder who posted a picture of the Belgian goalkeeper on his Twitter account.
The Belgian was loaned to Anderlecht last season after making a catalogue of errors during his 14 Newcastle appearances as the Toon gained promotion despite Sels’ worrying performances at the start of the campaign.

Indeed, Sels was supposedly set to join Anderlecht on a permanent basis but it has since been reported that the goalkeeper’s demands – along with Newcastle’s valuation of the goalkeeper – was too far out of their price range.
Sels’ future is unlikely to be at St. James’ Park, but his return to pre-season training suggests nothing is yet in the pipeline.
