Catania have been relegated from Serie A and left-back Ciro Capuano posted a personal apology to supporters on Twitter.
Sicilian side Catania have dropped into Serie B despite an impressive conclusion to the season which saw them beat Roma, Atalanta and Bologna in succession.
Yesterday’s final game of the campaign at Catania’s Stadio Massimino saw the players heckled and jeered by supporters despite running out 2-1 winners.
Emotions have been running high in Catania but defender Ciro Capuano attempted to rally the fans for next season’s attempt to return to the top flight.
“I want to say lots of things, but at the moment the only thing I feel I can say with the upmost sincerity is that we have to immediately think about returning to this level.
“I’m sorry for what has happened this season and thank both the fans who applauded us and the fans who insulted us because you all love this shirt and have suffered, but we will return from this fall stronger than before.”
Catania will have to suffer the indignity of being leapfrogged by Sicilian rivals Palermo, who are celebrating promotion to Serie A.
