Everton and Manchester United are keen on Bolton Wanderers goalkeeper Jake Turner.
Turner, 18, is yet to make a first team appearance for Bolton but is highly rated.
It is claimed Bolton will accept the highest offer for the teenager, and these days Everton can compete with Manchester United, even if it is the Red Devils who are claimed to be showing most interest so far.
Quitting Bolton for either club at this stage could be a risk for Turner, and he might find Everton is a smarter destination for him.
Manchester United’s David De Gea
Manchester United have real strength in depth at the goalkeeper position, with Spain and Argentina number ones David de Gea and Sergio Romero.
The biggest obstacle to Turner at United would be Joel Pereira, an outstanding young goalkeeper who Jose Mourinho has backed to be Portugal’s number one.
Pereira made his debut in the Premier League last season and has featured on United’s pre-season tour.
The Red Devils also have Sam Johnstone on loan at Aston Villa for the season, and signed 18-year-old stopper Theo Richardson from Leeds United earlier this year.
Turner’s path may be a little less competitive at Everton.
Jordan Pickford was signed this summer as first choice, potentially for years to come, but the future of those behind him is less certain.
Everton’s Maarten Stekelenburg
Joel Robles is expected to leave, while veteran Maarten Stelekenburg turns 35 this September and also does not have a long term future at the Toffees.
Polish youngster Mateusz Hewelt featured for the under-23s last season but is yet to be called up to the first team and has not travelled on tour with Koeman’s side, unlike Pereira at United.
There is room for another talented stopper who could go on to challenge Pickford if he develops on pace, and if Everton consider Turner up to the task, they may stand a better chance of convincing him to join them instead of Manchester United.
