Sunderland beat Newcastle United in a Wear-Tyne derby last night…….well kind of.

The Magpies’ Under-21 side lost 4-0 to Sunderland in a Checkatrade Trophy encounter at the Stadium of Light.

Newcastle’s youngsters held the Black Cats to a goalless first 45 minutes, but crumbled after the break.

An own goal from Kelland Watts and one from Charlie Wyke put the hosts 2-0 ahead within seven minutes of the restart, before Chris Maguire, who turns 30 next Wednesday, added a third.

In celebrating, the Sunderland midfielder put one finger to his lips and ‘shushed’ the travelling fans, who had been verbally sparring with their bitter North-East counterparts for much of the evening.

Tom Flanagan, Reece James, Luke O’Nien, Dylan McGeouch, Maguire, Duncan Watmore and Jerome Sinclair all started last night, and they’ve all been big players for Sunderland in League One this season.

It would have been a minor miracle had the Newcastle lads won, considering they weren’t expected to make it this far in the first place.

The quarter-final draw will take place tomorrow.
