The pair are struggling to usurp Paul Dummett in the pecking order at St James’ Park.

Newcastle United take on Preston North End in the Championship later today, hoping for a repeat performance from the EFL Cup tie between the two sides this week – in which Newcastle romped to a 6-0 win.

The usual suspects were all hard at work in Newcastle training this week but the presence of one player certainly caught the eye.

Massadio Haidara is something of a forgotten man at Newcastle United. The French left-back has struggled with injury problems since his move to the north-east and is now struggling to get any first-team football under the tutelage of Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez.

In fact, the 23-year-old has not played for Newcastle since a 6-2 win against Norwich City in the Premier league back in October 2015 – over a year ago.

It would certainly be a surprise to see him pop up against Preston this weekend.

He does appear to be chummy with another struggling Newcastle left-back. Achraf Lazaar has played just six minutes of Championship football for the club since the Moroccan made the move from Palermo in the summer.

He might have more of a chance than Haidara of first-team football under Benitez – but both look unlikely to wrestle the position away from Welshman Paul Dummett at present.
