Celtic lost 1-0 to Anderlecht on Tuesday night.

Celtic sealed their qualification to the Europa League in spite of a 1-0 defeat at home to Anderlecht on Tuesday night.

Jozo Simunovic’s own goal gave the Belgians a narrow victory on a night where they needed to score three in order to pip Celtic to third spot in Group B of the Champions League.

By all accounts it was an insipid performance from a Hoops side who never looked motivated to see off Anderlecht with a victory as a host of their big names failed to do the business.

Manager Brendan Rodgers was critical of his players at full time and captain Scott Brown’s expression said it all afterwards.

He wasn’t the only one looking glum after the final whistle as the legendary Rod Stewart also looked deflated by a flat Celtic performance.

Considering Celtic achieved what they set out to do and reached the Europa League, the result was not a disaster, but the performance was and Rodgers will know that much more is needed if he is to inspire a good run in Europe’s secondary competition in the new year.

For now, the Hoops regroup and will turn their attentions toward a trip to Hibernian on Sunday.
