The Netherlands’ disappointing Euro 2016 qualifying campaign continued on Monday as they suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to Iceland away from home.
The 2014 World Cup semi-finalists were expected to win the Group A clash at the Laugardalsvollur in Reykjavík, but they were stunned as the hosts staged a sensational performance.
Former Tottenham Hotspur attacking midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson was the star of the show for Iceland as he scored both the goals.
The 25-year-old, now at Swansea City, opened the scoring after just 10 minutes when he slotted home a penalty, and doubled the hosts’ advantage three minutes before the half-time interval.
The Netherlands tried to step up their game in the second half, but the Oranje were frustrated in their attempts to pick up even a point.
Below are the best pictures of the game, including those of Manchester United duo Robin van Persie and Dalay Blind.
