Newcastle clinched the Championship title with a 3-0 win over Barnsley on Sunday.

Newcastle United clinched the Championship title with a 3-0 home victory over Barnsley on Sunday afternoon, with Brighton dropping points at Aston Villa.
The Magpies needed to beat Barnsley and hope that Brighton failed to beat Villa in order to win the title, and Rafael Benitez’s men got the results they wanted.
Newcastle did their bit by beating Barnsley 3-0 at St. James’ Park, with Ayoze Perez, Chancel Mbemba and Dwight Gayle all getting on the scoresheet – and they received a huge favour from Aston Villa too.
Whilst Villa were a man down and a goal down after Nathan Baker was sent off for fouling Sam Baldock and Glenn Murray scored from the resulting penalty, Jack Grealish’s late deflected strike handed Steve Bruce’s men a share of the spoils.
That result sparked wild celebrations at St. James’ Park, as whilst Newcastle had already guaranteed promotion and their place in he Premier League next season, winning the title is a huge achievement on top of that.
The likes of Jonjo Shelvey, DeAndre Yedlin and Daryl Murphy were seen celebrating after the final whistle, with a host of Newcastle stars even going for a pile-on after winning the title, as seen below.
Players lifted the trophy at the end of a long, arduous season, before manager Rafael Benitez got his hands on the trophy too, having masterminded the club’s immediate return to the Premier League.
Fans will now be hoping to see Benitez commit his future to Newcastle moving forward, as he has the managerial expertise to make the Magpies into a force again – if owner Mike Ashley will give him the backing he has earned this season.
