The Magpies were not expected to even pick up a point from the encounter at St. James’ Park, but they collected all three.
A Martin Skrtel own goal saw the Magpies go ahead in the 69th minute, and a late effort from Georginio Wijnaldum helped secure the victory.
Over the course of the 90 minutes at St. James’ Park, hosts Newcastle had just 40% of the possession, took six shots of which only one was on target, and earned two corners.
Visitors Liverpool had 60% of the possession, took 10 shots of which just one was on target, and earned seven corners.
During the match, Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren was caught sharing a joke with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.
Also during the game, Newcastle midfielder Wijnaldum was seen looking concern for Liverpool defender Skrtel (see photos above and below).
