But the Stoke City defender’s former team-mates at Liverpool had the last laugh on Sunday!
Mamadou Sakho was delighted to see Stoke defender Glen Johnson again on Sunday afternoon, as the full-back came up against his former side at the Britannia Stadium.
Indeed, Liverpool beat the Potters 1-0 but played out a close encounter until the closing stages, while the man who switched Anfield for Stoke in the summer was reunited with some of his former team-mates for a pre-match chat.
During the game, meanwhile, the 30-year-old found himself coming up against Adam Lallana quite often.
Lallana was substituted in the second half – which is quite a regular occurrence at Liverpool – but the midfielder kept the Stoke defender on his toes throughout.
Yet it was Johnson’s former team-mates at Liverpool who ultimately had the last laugh at Stoke City, as playmaker Philippe Coutinho produced one of his trademark late strikes to seal a 1-0 win for the Reds.
Coutinho can frustrate fans by missing a series of good chances in a game but, one in every several produces a world-class effort and that proved the case once again at the Britannia Stadium, with Stoke left to rue the 23-year-old’s moment of magic.
