Leeds United consolidated their position in the Championship’s top two with a fantastic win at Sheffield United.
Leeds may have secured more emphatic victories this season, but few will go down as being more important or impressive than the 1-0 win away at Sheffield United on Saturday.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side picked up the three points with Jack Clarke capitalising on a late mistake from Blades goalkeeper Dean Henderson to play in Pablo Hernandez for the game’s only goal with eight minutes remaining.
In many ways, it was a remarkable performance from Leeds. They recovered from the early setback concerning Liam Cooper’s injury and put some very questionable decisions from the referee behind them to claim a huge three points in the promotion race.
Leeds definitely rode their luck at times and Chris Wilder’s men may feel hard done by to not get a point. But the Whites picked up the kind of win that will convince a lot of their doubters that they can clear the hurdle that has proved too big for them in the last two seasons.
And that is perhaps why some of the players could not hide their emotions during and after the game. Both Pontus Jansson and Mateusz Klich’s joy is obvious, while Pablo Hernandez’s delight at what proved to be the winning goal was also clear.
Hernandez is normally quite a relaxed character who seems to manage to keep his emotions in check, but the importance of the goal is evident as he runs to celebrate with the travelling Leeds supporters.
Here are some of the defining images from the win…
